Power to Choose Texas: The Official Tool and Its Limitations
Power to Choose is the official electricity comparison website operated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). It was created to help Texas consumers in deregulated areas compare retail electricity plans from licensed providers. Entering your ZIP code returns a list of available plans with pricing, contract terms, and links to each provider Electricity Facts Label.
While Power to Choose serves an important public function, it has documented limitations. Providers can pay to have their plans featured prominently, meaning plans displayed first are not necessarily the lowest-priced options for your usage level. The default rate shown is typically based on 2,000 kWh per month, which does not reflect actual costs for customers who use significantly more or less electricity.
Complex rate structures — including bill credits that only apply at specific usage thresholds — can make plan comparisons misleading unless you carefully review the Electricity Facts Label at your specific usage level.
FindEnergyRates.com provides an independent, transparent comparison that surfaces plans based on your actual usage profile. Our goal is to show you the true effective rate so you can make a genuinely informed decision.
